Morrisania is a part of the Bronx that has a rich history dating all the way back to colonial times. During the 1700s, this part of the Bronx was settled by Lewis Morris and was named for his estate Morrisania. It should be noted that Mr. Morris was not only a landowner and developer, but he was also a congressional delegate and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. After the revolution, he offered his estate and land as the site of the U.S. Capital. Since that time, Morrisania has seen its fair share of revolutionary changes some better than others. Yet it has also held onto to some of the grandness of its past. Though the land that was once home to the equestrian New York Driving Club is now dominated by affordable housing, Morrisania has its own historic district on Clay Avenue. Between East 165th and East 166th Streets there are over 30 residential buildings (mostly semi-detached multi-family homes) that were built during the turn of the century and pay homage to old architecture of the past. And there are many other buildings, both residential and commercial, which tell the tale of a storied past. But Morrisania is not just preserving its past. It is steadily moving ahead toward the future. Standing out in the midst of its cluster of rental buildings, is the newly built Arbor House on East 166th Street. It is the first green building of its kind in this community, and has quickly become its pride and joy. It was constructed using local and recycled building materials and was officially opened in early 2013. The building has many amenities which lend itself to good health including indoor and outdoor fitness areas, a state-of-the-art ventilation and filtration system, and has a 100% smoke-free policy throughout. However, its most talked about and most praised feature is the Rooftop Farm contained within a commercial-grade hydroponic greenhouse which provides fresh, chemical-free herbs, fruits and veggies to the community. In addition to all this, Morrisania is also commuter-friendly. For those heading to Manhattan and the other boroughs, there is the #2 train at Freeman Street which will get you to Times Square in 40-45 minutes. At that same station, you can also catch the #5 train, which travels the east side of Manhattan and gets you to Grand Central in 30-35 minutes. Or you can opt for the pricier Metro-North Railroad located on Park Avenue and 162nd Street and will get you into midtown in less than 30 minutes.
